This policy brief emphasizes the need for Central Asian (CA) countries to adapt their transport infrastructure in line with their decarbonization commitments. The transport sector, particularly road transport, remains one of the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions in CA, accounting for more than 80% of CO2 emissions in the sector. Over the past 15 years, countries in the region have invested over $55 billion in transport infrastructure; however, these investments fall short of developing sustainable infrastructure, resulting in subpar quality, low efficiency, and high emissions levels. The document highlights the necessity for collective regional action by CA governments, based on the joint development of decarbonization strategies. Investments in sustainable transport will allow CA countries to move toward a low-carbon future while also fostering economic growth and regional integration.
